Can I make some real money playing poker?
I never played much live poker before, but I have been playing online a lot in the past. While I didn't win much, I can say that I did have an acceptable win rate at $0,50/1 No Limit Hold'em in the past. I do prefer playing tournaments though, and I did have some decent results there. But I cannot say that I made enough money to make a living by playing poker.
When I moved to the Dominican Republic in 2013, I started playing live poker at the local casino. They have poker tournaments on an almost daily basis, and I met a lot of people there that were easy to connect to - after all, poker was a common interest.
The tournaments are a little crazy there, buyins varying from $5 to $100. Since they are all one night events, the blinds double up every 15 minutes. Obviously, a lot of luck is needed, but it turns out that my reading skills proved pretty handy and I found myself making final table more often than not.
The final table has the average chipstacks holding 5-6 blinds most of the time, and the chip leader would be happy to have 15-20 BBs. Raising ranges are pretty wide obviously, and coinflips are very common.
After a while, I decided to step it up a little and started looking for bigger tournaments in the part of the World I was now living in, and stumbled over the Latin American Poker Tour LAPT. I decided to try an online satellite playing at Pokerstars, and with a buyin of $100 I managed to win a ticket for the main event at the 2014 season finale at Lima, Peru. It turned out it wasn't a package I won, so I had to pay for my flight and my ticket by myself, but once I had the ticket worth $1700, I decided to invest some more and flew to Lima to have some fun.
I'll keep you updated about what happened there!
